Optimal database marketing--strategy, development and data mining.

Optimal database marketing--strategy, development and data mining

Ronald G. Drozdenko and Perry D. Drake

Sage Publications, 2002

398pp, hard cover [pounds sterling]42

ISBN 0 7619 2357 8

The evolution of direct marketing from crude 'junk mail' to sophisticated, carefully targeted and strategically planned 'customer relationship management' is well charted. This, and the development of integrated marketing communications and media neutral brand planning means that a sound book on database marketing ought to be part of every market researcher's library.

Dr Ronald G. Drozdenko is Professor and Chair of the Marketing Department, Ancell School of Business and Perry D. Drake is Vice President of the eponymous database consultancy in New York. Optimal Database Marketing explains underlying theory and describes how to carry out the diverse range of operational procedures, and in this respect the book is an excellent digest of the principles and practice of database marketing. The scope of this includes relevant issues and trends in marketing and databases, plus, of course the nitty-gritty issues of data-base methods:

* the statistical principles behind a sampling and data capture

* guidance on defining data needs, technology, and database maintenance routines

* methods of data analysis (especially segmentation and mining), validation and reporting.

Optimal Database Marketing is a well written and thorough book that succeeds within its rather specific scope and focus--and if that sounds like damning with faint praise, then so be it. Whilst market researchers need a book on database marketing, this may not be the ideal text.

The first and perhaps most important point to make is that this is an American book for students. The American backdrop is shown by the choice of case studies and narrative examples, and although we can quite easily read our way past those, more seriously the cultural, regulatory and legal context within which database marketing operates in the United States is quite different to the United Kingdom. To the door mail delivery, internet usage, attitudes to be 'being sold to' and the requirements of the Data Protection Act are but a few obvious examples of the vital differences between database marketing in the UK and US. A further important point is that this is not a business book, the useful 'Review Questions' at the end of each chapter are typical student assignments rather than questions directed to improving an existing database marketing system.

This book is accessible and highly readable, with an uncomplicated writing style. Any book on this subject has to tackle the complex and highly technical subject of the statistical science of database management. In this the authors have worked hard and are largely successful. The structure of the book also makes it very user-friendly--both as a book to be read through and as a work of reference.

* It features detailed contents pages

* A 'preamble' to each chapter describing its scope, and each chapter ends with a summary and a series of review questions to aid learning (although these do have a student bias as discussed above)

* There are lots of (American) case studies and examples, including one which provides a consistent thread throughout the book

* There is a very helpful glossary, as well as a full index, bibliography and suggested further reading.

Some of the issues that IJMR readers might find important are beyond the scope of this book--and the reader will look in vain for discussion of more 'philosophical' or strategic issues such as:

* The role and contribution of database marketing within marketing communications

* Integration of database marketing with other communications activities

* Issues surrounding the impact of the content of direct marketing material and creative aspects in general

* The whole subject of consumer/customer issues, such as likely response rates and how to maximise them, the impact of database marketing activity on loyalty, monitoring effectiveness etc.

* Moreover, ethical considerations are debated only briefly.

In short this is a book that unravels the mysteries of a vital but 'back room' activity. It explains what data departments (in direct marketing agencies and client-side marketing organisations) get up to with all that data, and how and why they do it. For those who need to know about this, the book can be warmly recommended, and in fact this probably includes quite a broad sweep of people:

* The students who are the primary target for the book

* Those who need to interact with the data department--their colleagues and line managers, plus all their clients.

* The back room boys themselves have an excellent work of reference to remind them of the theory and best practice, although I doubt those with working experience of database management will learn anything totally new.

However, don't forget the need to 'translate' from the American and all in all for a general read on direct and database marketing as a whole, MRS members might like to note the text recommended by the Institute of Direct Marketing--Direct and Data-Base Marketing, Graeme McCorkell, 1988, Kogan Page, soft cover, 320pp (ISBN 0 7494 1960 1)

vFinance Investments Names Kenneth J. McCarthy to Chief Economist Post.

Business Editors

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2003

Industry Veteran to Provide Economic Analysis to Firm's

Institutional and High Net Worth Clients

vFinance Investments Inc, (OTCBB:VFIN), a rapidly expanding financial services firm servicing high growth companies, high net worth investors and institutions focused on aggressive growth, has named Kenneth J. McCarthy as its Chief Economist. Mr. McCarthy, a respected industry veteran, will provide in-depth analysis and perspective on fundamental economic factors that influence the markets.

Mr. McCarthy, a frequent guest on CNBC and Reuters TV, will focus on the further development of vFinance's proprietary Entrepreneurial Confidence Index (ECI), the industry's leading tool for the early identification of emerging technologies, companies and industries. During the first quarter, more than 11,000 emerging companies, financial institutions and private investors participated in the ECI at http://www.vfinance.com, the Internet's leading private equity portal.

"Ken has a proven record of delivering solid economic forecasts in a challenging market environment," said Victoria Santaella, VFIN's Executive Vice President, Research Services Division. "Ken's industry expertise coupled with his ability to recognize, react and communicate pivotal economic changes will be a significant benefit to our private and institutional clients."

"Because of the importance that small and medium sized business has on the U.S. economy, the ECI is uniquely positioned to become a major economic indicator," said McCarthy. "The ability to spot the development of new industries at their inception will provide investors significant opportunities to earn higher returns."

Previously, Mr. McCarthy was Managing Director and founder of the Economic Intelligence Company, a consulting firm that specializes in sector and market-wide analysis. Prior to founding EIC in 1992, Mr. McCarthy was associated for 14 years with Rinfret Associates, Inc., an international intelligence firm headed by prominent economist Pierre Rinfret. Mr. McCarthy joined Rinfret in 1978 as an economic research associate and served successively as staff economist, Vice President and Senior Vice President.

Mr. McCarthy has extensive experience in domestic as well as global research and forecasting. He has traveled widely to conduct research in the U.S. and abroad for client corporations. His reports range across the fields of economics, finance and politics. He has long experience in operating a worldwide network of correspondents. In developing his extensive Washington contacts, Mr. McCarthy has worked with staffs of national political figures and Congressional committees.

Mr. McCarthy received a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from St. Anselm's College in New Hampshire and a Master of Arts degree in Economics from Fordham University.

"The results of the past ten years have clearly demonstrated that the US economy in large part is being driven by healthy entrepreneurial activity," said McCarthy. "vFinance is clearly the leading firm on Wall Street that not only understands this, but has the proprietary research tools to monitor it."

If dating is a game, then I must be losing.(Features)

Byline: anne.gildea

Fair play to the Donegal woman who sued a dating agency for lack of romantic success. I haven't had a sniff of romance myself for going on three years. Not due to any self-deprecation on my part: I know what I have to offer. I'm easygoing, have a fine head of naturally not-grey hair, fully functioning extremities and all my own teeth.

And I know my drawbacks: commitment phobia, trust issues, inherent doubt about whether meeting a man is The Ideal, a wild streak, a lot of fillings and a tendency to ramble... where was I? Oh yeah. Yer woman suing the agency -- sometimes I wish there was someone I could sue for my utter lack of romance too. Yet I didn't give good money in the hope of meeting a Mr Man.

Everything a price She paid [euro]600 for 12 introductions and the men she met sounded like characters that'd now, so not the perfect man?' have you looking round, going, 'Is this Candid Camera?' The man so shy, he could barely talk? The one who introduced his tongue when she was giving him a peck goodbye on the cheek? Ugh. Did she tick the 'Big Eejit' box when it came to the 'what I like in a man' list? No, she did not.

She probably thought, as I would if I paid top dollar to join a matchmaking agency, that she'd be presented with a veritable chocolate box of 12, and the only issue would be choosing the most delectable of the whole delicious bunch. Then again, she lives in Letterkenny, so what did she expect? Small town. If she hadn't met Mr Perfect down the local, then chances are he didn't live in the area. In the event, she gave up after four bitter disappointments. She should have seen it coming in the name of the agency -- The Happy Matchmaker. Not The Happy Matchmades.

See? Ah, well. I guess it's fair to figure that if you pay good money, you can expect your 'consumer satisfaction'. In a world where everything has a price tag, why not the 'perfect man'? But as the Letterkenny litigation proves, meeting your match is massively more complex.

I know someone who joined such an agency. She made it clear her passion was books. That was the number-one 'common interest' she requested. She met the first date, asked him what he was reading at the moment. 'Ermm,' he said after a long pause, 'the last book I remember reading was Black Beauty. When I was 11.' What happened there? An honest mistake on the part of the agency, or the matchmaker taking the executive decision that bookishness is not the way true love lies? Or simply that, having collated her desires, they just shoved anything in trousers her way to fulfil the requisite number of dates that the contract stipulated. That was the basis of our Donegal heroine's case.

Did The woman I know came to the same conclusion but didn't go the court-case route. She tried the internet instead and joined the Another Friend site in January. By May of that year, she had met her man. Seven years later they're as happy as Larry. The trick, she told me, was that they emailed each other regularly for several months before actually meeting. you Ninety per cent get nervous - which is 48 per cent end with I shared that story with another friend who I knew had also tried Another Friend. 'Ah, blah,' she grumbled. According to her, you can be emailing someone till the cows come home, chortling at each other's jokes and having a grand ol' connection via your broadband provider. Then you meet that person and wham, bam, NOTHING. No chemistry.

No buzz. Just the instant desire to run away, retract a couple of months' worth of emails, and erase the whole thing from the 'dating file' of your brain.

In our hearts we know the best way to meet someone is serendipitously, face to face.

But how often does that truly happen? I read an interview recently with a British author. Speaking about how she met her second husband, she said she saw him across a crowded room and thought, 'Ah, there you are.' I've never thought such a thing about a man. Have you? I've seen incredibly attractive chaps across crowded rooms and just thought, 'Ah, so lovely, and so far away, all the way over there.' I've never gone, 'Yep, there he is, better go and get him.' Maybe that's a national character thing: innate Irish bashfulness vs English self-confidence? It's a tantalising notion, that you can just go to an agency, circumvent the ups and downs of the hunt and find Mr Right. But going on the evidence above, perhaps it would be better to sidestep the matchmaker type and go for one of the detective variety: 'Hi, I'm looking for a guy. Tall, dark, handsome; solvent; own furnished bungalow; can string a sentence together and doesn't see every instance of facial proximity as an opportunity for a snogdive.

know? of single people about first kisses possibly why only of first dates a kiss No, sorry, I don't know his name -- yet. That's your job, buster.' The plaintiff in the Donegal case accused the company of negligence, breach of duty and fraudulent misrepresentation because she didn't meet a man. Many's the man I've met that I would have loved to sue for the very same things.

And there you go -- that's probably what the judge concluded too when he rejected the case for damages: all's fair in love.

anne.gildea@mailonsunday.ie and go Did you know? Ninety per cent of single people get nervous about first kisses - which is possibly why only 48 per cent of first dates end with a kiss know your CENSUS The 2011 census of population takes place tonight -- a massive countrywide undertaking to update the data gathered in 2006 ? The census is organised by the Central Statistics Office, which employs a temporary field force of nearly 5,500 people to carry out the operation at local level ? The form consists of 35 questions that must be answered in respect of every person who is staying in the house this evening plus 12 household questions

RTA to accelerate construction of Al Sufouh Tram project.

Summary: DUBAI - The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is set to accelerate the construction pace of Al Sufouh Tram project, where completion rate of the construction works has now exceeded 30% and the construction company is currently engaged in completing the supporting infrastructure of the project.

DUBAI - The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is set to accelerate the construction pace of Al Sufouh Tram project, where completion rate of the construction works has now exceeded 30% and the construction company is currently engaged in completing the supporting infrastructure of the project.

The RTA has agreed with the Alstom-Besix Consortium to step up the work tempo in the project; the first stage of which is set for completion in 2014," said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA. "Works are currently focused on building the tram's infrastructure along a corridor stretching from Dubai Marina to Jumeirah city where water and electricity lines in the area have been identified. Work is underway to bypass the utility lines and lay the foundations underpinning the tram rails through which the tram receives power feed," he stated.

Explaining the salient features of Al Sufouh Tram Al Tayer said, "Al Safouh Tram Project extends 14 km along Al Safouh Road and the initial Phase envisages the construction of a 9.5 km-long track starting from Dubai Marina up to the Mall of the Emirates Station. The Tram network comprises 19 passenger stations 9 of which are covered under Phase I and spread across activity and population density areas along the tram route. Each train measures 44 meters in length and has a capacity to accommodate about 300 passengers. The fleet consists of 8 trams in Phase I and 17 more will be added in Phase II such that a total of 25 trains will be in place capable of commuting about 5000 passengers per hour per direction."

The tram track basically extends at-grade level along Al Sufouh Road but rises in an elevated section across certain areas of Dubai Marina for reasons dictated by urban structures of the locality. It passes in a route parallel to the Dubai Metro Red Line and links up with the metro system in three stations along Sheikh Zayed Road where tram stations are linked via footbridges with the metro stations to ease transit and exchange of passengers between the two modes. Al Sufouh Tram will also be linked with the Monorail of the Palm Jumeirah at the entrance of the Palm from Al Sufouh Road to facilitate passenger traffic between districts served by both projects.

Al Sufouh Transit System will be a new addition to the outstanding array of projects witnessed by the emirate of Dubai. The train comprises a First Class carriage (Golden Suite), and another carriage dedicated to women and children in addition to a silver carriage. Carriages will have top class interior finishing at deluxe standards and will be fitted with the latest transmitting and display systems of data and entertainment materials. The design of carriages and stations satisfies the requirements of special needs persons with a view to easing their movement, boarding and alighting from the tram, besides designating certain seating area for them onboard.

The train does not need overhead power supply cables as it will be supplied with a modern and safe ground power cable system, and is fitted with an automated safety & protection system ensuring sufficient distance between the rolling stocks to avoid any collision, and all stations will be fitted with central air-conditioning systems. Al Sufouh Tram is the world's first tram network that uses platform screen doors fully aligned with the train door opening and shutting mechanism, providing maximum level of convenience, safety and security to passengers, and at the same time maintain the efficiency of air-conditioning quality at the interior of both stations and carriages from external climatic effects. The passenger platform extends 44 meters and is equipped with Automatic Fare Collections systems.

"The Project serves residential and commercial areas along the tramway passing through Al Safouh, Dubai Marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City. In recent years these areas witnessed high-end property developments for residential, commercial and tourist purposes. They encompass prominent commercial and tourist landmarks such as the Mall of the Emirates, Madinat Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab in addition to areas of high significance such as the Knowledge Village, Dubai Media City and Dubai Internet City. Demographic studies of the project revealed that those areas are populated by about 180 thousands residents, 210 thousand workers and 20 thousand visitors. The high population and workers density reflects the importance of the tram project as an initial step in a chain of similar transit modes to cover all high density areas in the emirate," noted Al Tayer.

He pointed out that RTA is currently working on a study to identify the investment potentials of the project such as the rentable advertising spaces in stations and onboard the train cars through benefiting from the successful experience gained from the leasing of ad space as well as the naming rights of the Dubai Metro stations.
