Rome--On January 17, 2003, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) published a "Doctrinal Note on some of the questions regarding the participation of Catholics in political life." The document was approved by the Pope on November 21, 2002.
The CDF points out that in democracies everybody has the right to vote and to participate in politics. Today people "play their full role as citizens." For Christians that demands that they exercise their task of infusing the temporal order with Christian values.
The Note does not cover the entire teaching of the Church, which is summarized in its essentials in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Here it intends to recall only some basic principles.
