BANGKOK, Thailand - The United States said Monday that Myanmar's latest crackdown belied the military government's claims to be negotiating with the opposition, and a top U.N. envoy said recent reports of dissident arrests were "extremely disturbing."
Rights groups said four of Myanmar's most prominent political activists were arrested during the weekend.
Speaking in Bangkok after meeting with Thailand's foreign minister, U.N. envoy Ibrahim Gambari said the reports were "extremely disturbing and these actions must stop at once."
In Washington, a State Department spokesman, Tom Casey, criticized the junta.
