Fed: Aust unlikely to meet greenhouse targets: AD
The Australian Democrats says Australia is unlikely to meet its commitments to cut
greenhouse gas emissions.
The party's energy spokeswoman LYN ALLISON says new figures showing an increase in
greenhouse emissions in the past 12 months is evidence government policy is failing.
Senator ALLISON says greenhouse gas reduction programs negotiated with the Democrats
as part of the GST tax package would only go some way to solving the problem.
She says another year and Australia is another 1.1 per cent further away from meeting
what is looking like an increasingly impossible target.
Greenhouse gas emissions climbed 1.1 per cent in 1999.
Total emissions are 17.4 per cent higher than in 1990 despite a target under the Kyoto
protocol to limit growth to eight per cent by 2008-2012.
Senator ALLISON says a domestic greenhouse trading system had to be introduced as it
is the only sure way to get the big energy users and all government departments and ministers
to think greenhouse.
