SA: Woman bashed, robbed of seven dollars

ADELAIDE, Aug 30 AAP - A woman was in hospital suffering facial fractures after being
attacked and robbed of seven dollars by a group of girls in Adelaide's south last night.

A police spokesman said the 21-year-old woman from the southern suburbs was kicked
and punched in the incident on Nicole Street at Christies Beach about 11.30pm (CST).

Police have called for the public's help to identify the group of four to six girls
involved in the attack.

Anyone with information has been asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NSW: Union claims victory over live shipment of cattle

SYDNEY, April 16 AAP - The Australasian Meatworkers' Union claimed victory today in
its campaign against the shipment of live cattle from the New South Wales port of Newcastle.

The union had joined forces with the animal rights group Animal Liberation NSW in a
bid to prevent cattle boarding a cargo carrier today in Newcastle bound for the Middle
East.

But union national secretary Tom Hannan said today the ship that was to have carried
the cattle was rerouted to Portland, in Victoria, where regular shipments have met little
opposition.

He said the joint campaign, which also had the backing of the community in Newcastle,
had worried Elders, the agricultural agents organising the shipment.

"I think we frightened the life out of them. I have no doubt, if we hadn't done something,
the ship would have come in," he said.

The union has opposed live shipments from Newcastle because they result in less cattle
being slaughtered in Australia and a loss of jobs in the meat processing industry.

It also backs Animal Liberation's position that live exports are cruel because cattle
are subject to inhumane treatment during transport and at their destinations, mostly in
the Middle East, Indonesia and Japan.

Mr Hannan said Elders had been put off by the possibility of negative publicity.

"They certainly didn't want to stir up a hornets' nest," he said.

Mark Pearson, president of Animal Liberation NSW, was also claiming victory.

"We see it as a win," he said. "This was the first time they (the live exporters) were
going to face such a storm, because they usually use remote ports.

"I think they're certainly concerned about the mass of publicity.

"Because of the alliance formed with all the unions and us, it has sparked a more powerful
effort to tackle the issue nationally.

"We're going to build up a campaign towards the next federal election and make it a major issue."

A spokesman for Elders refused to comment.

He denied union claims BHP Coal was enforcing Pilbara conditions on the coal industry workforce.

"There's enterprise agreements that cover all our mines, and we have been working very

VIC: No polling booth for MCG, Melbourne Show

The MCG won't become a polling station for the Victorian election, and the electoral
commission says football fans have to vote early before heading to the AFL preliminary final.

The Victorian Electoral Commission says football followers must cast their vote in their
electorates on September 18 ahead of any plans to attend the MCG final.

Commission public information manager DOUG BEECROFT says there will be about 1,600 polling
booths across the state but none at the football or at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Mr BEECROFT says they are advertising to encourage people to vote before they go.

When Premier JEFF KENNETT called the election last week opponents claimed he nominated
September 18 so that the election campaign would be buried by the AFL finals coverage.

FED: Premiers welcomes drugs plans, with some resvervations

CANBERRA, April 9 AAP - Premiers today welcomed Prime Minister John Howard's push for a
national approach to the drugs problem, despite some reservations.

Queensland premier Peter Beattie said education would be an important component and young
people in particular needed to be warned about the problems with drugs.

"It has to be done sensibly and sensitively in the school system.I welcome that. That is a
good move," he said on ABC Radio .

"There are some measures for prisons. Of course, we end up with a bill on that because
prisons are run by the state, as are schools.

"I do have some concern. I want to make certain that money that goes into rehabilitation is
influenced, I would prefer controlled, because we can then have a comprehensive view about
rehabilitation."

Victorian premier Jeff Kennett said they needed to see how Mr Howard would back his
national drugs scheme with money.

"There is no money being spoken of and there is no indication of how that money is going to
be directed," he said.

"But I don't want to be churlish. If we spend another million in trying to assist people on
drugs, it's a million dollars we are not spending now so it's in the right direction."

Mr Kennett said he was concerned about proposed mandatory treatment as people could not be
forced to be treated.

"But I think there is a lot to be said within the prime minister's proposal," he said. "We
don't, on our side, accept the concept of zero tolerance. I think the prime minister has put a
genuine proposition forward. We go in with an open mind."

Mr Kennett said a national drugs death tally was a good idea and similar moves to highlight
road deaths had proved effective.

"Right now our road toll in Victoria is 100. Our deaths through heroin is 102," he said.
"We have got to talk more about it."

QLD: Missing five found safe off Queensland coast

BRISBANE, Dec 23 AAP - Five people missing in rough seas off Hinchinbrook Island overnight
were found safe and well on a secluded beach, police said today.

An air and sea search was launched yesterday when the three adults, aged between 28 and 68,
and two children, aged five and eight, failed to return from a fishing trip.

A police spokesman said rough seas and a thunderstorm in the area prevented any search
overnight.

A distress flare was spotted in the early hours of this morning, leading searchers to Cape
Sandwich Beach, on the eastern side of Hinchinbrook Island, off the north Queensland coast.

Police said the engine of their four-metre dinghy broke down yesterday.

The party of five was ferried to Cardwell on the mainland, 1500km north of Brisbane.

WA:Bushfires devastate mid-west region

Pastoralists in Western Australia's mid-west are facing millions of dollars in losses
after nine bushfires swept through 15-hundred square-kilometres of prime grazing land
this week.

Pastoralists and Graziers Association of WA spokesman EDGAR RICHARDSON says livestock
farmers had been preparing for their best season in years, after heavy seasonal rains,
before the fires struck.

He says it's a disaster for these farmers who've been going through a series of droughts
for quite a few years.

Mr RICHARDSON says it's too early to count livestock losses but has estimated the cost
to the industry would be at least three million dollars.

Graziers will meet with local authorities on Monday to assess the damage.
